Senseis Doyle and Verycken working out at the Wooster St. Dojo in NY.

Joseph Leahy was a Vietnam vet, he received a number of medals while stationed in Vietnam, His platoon was sprayed with agent orange and, after returning to the states, he slowly started to deteriorate and was placed on multiple medications. He suffered every day of his life but never gave up hope, his meditating power was un-believable; he recently passed on. Joe's favorite book was The Karate Dojo and he could recite the entire book. Please read his prayer on Infinite Stillness

This award was given to Shihan Verycken by Joseph Leahy's family. It is an award that was given to Joseph Leahy by the President of the United States; Shihan Verycken was Joseph Leahy's Sensei since the early 1970s.

1969; Master Joe Louis and Verycken after teaching a Seminar in Bridgeton N.J. Sensei Louis asked Sensei Verycken if he would like to box with him, Verycken accepted the challenge, of course he was no match for the heavyweight Joe Louis. Verycken stated Joe Lewis could have creamed me however he was a real gentleman and taught me a great deal in boxing.

O'Sensei Urban,s 1st. Dojo at 13th St. Union City, New Jersey. This photo was very old, I touched it up the best I could. The sign over the windows was also touched up, the original sign said Goju - Ryu Karatedo school of self-defense.

Hoboken YMCA, O'Sensei Urban taught here for three months before moving to New York, teaching at the JuDo Twins Dojo. Senseis Verycken, Shaffer, and O'Sensei Urban's relative, Kenny Urban, helped teach at the Hoboken YMCA

Crosby St, Dojo, one block away was Canal Street, I often visited Sensei on Saturdays. He would always send me around the corner to buy a chocolate malt, that was one of his favorite breakfasts. Six blocks away was Chinatown, we often went there for dinner or lunch. He also liked going to the Chinese movie theater, sometimes after the movie we would go back to his Dojo and practice some of the moves from the movie

Back in the early 60s Shihan Verycken was a Boy Scout leader of troop # 2 in Hoboken N.J. He always enjoyed working out with youth groups, in this photo he is teaching a Boy Scout troop in North Wildwood N.J. He would teach a number of youth groups absolutely free. Photo taken in 1989.

The black round disc on the ceiling was one of the training aids that O'Sensei Urban created. We used to do jump kicks and tried to kick it with the ball of our foot, if you did not kick it exactly right you could break your toe.

The following photos were taken in the old days at the Metropolitan Karate Society. Freestyle fighting was rough and tumble, there was no such thing as protective gear

This photo of Louis Delgado and Verycken free sparring was taken before Delgado moved to California. When Sensei Delgado came back to New Jersey he, along with O'Sensei Urban, Verycken and Ric Pascetta, had very hard workouts at Pascetta's Dojo in South Jersey

Respect between teacher and students was mandatory

In this photo students are executing double punching techniques. All workouts were non stop, some workouts lasted three hours

We would spend 15 to 20 minutes just on the ground fighting techniques alone

When O'Sensei Urban shouted lineup there was never any hesitation, one could hear a pin drop. There was complete silence as we all patiently waited for O'Sensei to enter the dojo floor

O'Sensei Urban's first command was Zar-Zan, all of the black belts would line up right to left followed by the brown belts, purple belts, green belts and so on down the line; sometimes on the right side and left side of him were his two highest rank black belts.

After bowing to one another the workouts immediately began, after all warm-up exercises a double line system was formed. In the double line system a number of exercises were executed, the exercise in the photo on your left is called pulling
